That’s Sure a Big Coyote!

It is common knowledge that Eastern coyotes are bigger than their Western cousins.  But how much bigger?  Many trappers give an exceptionally large coyote a heft and a guess and from that point forward their guessed weight becomes gospel. Like fishermen, the coyote might even grow a bit with each telling of their story about the “Big One.”

The Weights of Coyotes in Virginia

In 1991, I published a scientific paper with Dr. Russ Mason on the weights of coyotes in the mid-Atlantic region (Virginia). It was no big surprise that we documented these Eastern coyotes were, as others had found, larger than Western coyotes.

You can find my paper in the University of Nebraska Digital Commons.  https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/

This contest begins a 12 noon on Saturday August 24, 2024
and closes at 12 noon Friday August 30, 2024.
